 LENTEN PROJECT FOR POOR CHILDREN

I was thinking about my Lenten practices…pray, fast and give alms (sharing what you have with others especially the poor).

Usually I buy flowers for the chapel once a week. In Lent I feel it is not necessary to adorn the chapel so well, so I decided not to buy any flowers for the whole of Lent. Then I decided to use that money to give to the poor.

But in what way to give to the poor? I don’t see any real poor people in the streets, not like in the slums of India or Philippines. There you can see people in rags or with dirty faces full of misery and hunger.

Suddenly I had an idea. In our stock room we had many beautiful children’s books which were over-printed. What a pity these books could be not given to the poor children whose parents could not afford to buy these books for them.

As I was looking through the new HONG KONG CATHOLIC CHURCH DIRECTORY, I saw the name: Hong Kong Catholic Education Development Committee. I phoned them and asked if there were poor schools where children could not afford to buy books to read.  They told me, yes, there are so many poor children from estate schools run by the Catholic Diocese.

The Lord inspired me and showed me a plan to allow generous and eager Catholics to give these books to the poor children. Since we needed to get back some money that we had spent in printing those books, I told my friends that we would let them sponsor these books by paying only $2 per copy. The people were  glad to sponsor whatever quantity of books they desired so that the poor children could have books to read.

Last Saturday,  April  1st, I packed 18 boxes of books which I was instructed to  send to Principal Ho of Lai Chi Kok Catholic Primary School. Later I again packed another 100 copies which were taken by the school. Now I am happy I had a chance to give my little money as almsgiving for Lent. At the same time some children in 52 Catholic primary schools will have the joy of reading and possessing at least one book of their own.
