THE GOLDEN JUBILEE OF SR MARY GRACE LEE

“The Jubilee shall be holy to you. The Lord has ordered that the land will yield its fruit and you will eat your fill and live on it securely. The Lord will order a blessing for you.” (Leviticus chapter 25)

IT IS REALLY TRUE. This year of my Golden Jubilee has been such a wonderful blessing, to me, to my family and fellow sisters. At age 77, God has given me good health and much loving zeal in following him. I enjoy and love my mission, that of proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Master with the media of social communication. I feel secure and loved in God’s land (my congregation) which has yielded much fruit for me. This fruit can be seen in my Pauline apostolic life.

Did I see the Pope!!

The first angel to welcome me in the religious life was SR ELISABETTA CAPELLO. She was a young and joyful Italian sister, newly arrived in the Philippines. She welcomed me in the right spirit. I felt that this was what consecrated life should be. She was a good and happy model. Sr Elisabetta and her brother priest are the only children of her parents who willingly gave their son and daughter to God. Today Sr Elisabetta is still active in our media mission of spreading the Gospel although she is limited in her movements. She had a leg amputated because of diabetes but she is still smiling and happy and full of energy for the Lord.

The second angel was my novitiate  teacher, Sr Nazarena Morando who had been in this post for more than thirty years. The year of novitiate is the beginning of the consecrated life with its many essential teachings and principles which will help the young sisters walk the right path to holiness and apostolic mission. Sister Nazarena truly loved me more than a mother loves her daughter. We were more than fifty young novices, all eager to learn and to become fervent followers of Jesus. She often told us to pay attention and to offer ourselves completely to God, with our heart and soul, not half-heartedly or lazily. I always tried to be near her so that I could catch all the good words from her lips and imitate all her good examples. She never scolded us or raised her voice, even if we were not doing well. When God called her to heaven, all of us grieved and missed her presence.

My third angel is Sr Irene Conti, another Italian sister who entered the Daughters of St Paul at age 9. Our congregation was very poor at that time and  Sr Irene did not reach her full physical growth for lack of good nutrition. Though small in stature, Sr Irene is a giant in my esteem. She came into my life at a moment when I needed a change in my mission.  She sent me to India where I could develop my potentials and where I was very happy in the midst of much poverty and hard work. I have never seen Sr Irene angry or impatient. She is soft-spoken and  full of good cheer, always eager to listen and to share in whatever is happening. Perhaps her weakness  is that she can never say NO to anyone. But I can see the love and care in all that she does. This year Sr Irene celebrated her 100th birthday and she is still alert and full of good spirit. Sr Irene’s smiling face is always before me, and I thank God for her presence in my life.

MY MOST HEARTFELT LOVE AND THANKS TO GOD, TO THE BLESSED MOTHER,

TO MY CONGREGATION THE DAUGHTERS OF ST PAUL,

TO  MY OWN FAMILY IN SINGAPORE,

TO ALL MY FRIENDS AND THOSE WHOM I HAVE MET IN OUR MISSION

IN THE SCHOOLS AND CHURCHES, AND TO EVERYBODY.

I ASK THE LORD TO BLESS YOU ALL AND MAKE YOU HAPPY AND HOLY,

ALL THE DAYS OF YOUR LIFE.

Sr Mary Grace Lee, a Singaporean, joined the DAUGHTERS OF ST PAUL in the Philippines. She made her first religious Profession in Rome in 1963.

Now fifty years later, she celebrated her Golden Jubilee, in Rome, on 29th June 2013. At this solemn and grand ceremony in the Queen of Apostles’ Church, were all the Jubilarians of the Pauline Family. After the special lunch, Sister Grace and her fellow sisters received many beautiful gifts including a pilgrimage to Fatima to thank God and the Blessed Mother for all the blessings given to the sisters.

Sr Grace went to the General Audience of Pope Francis and even went to Assisi to catch a little of the spirit of simplicity of life of St Francis who inspired this new Pope in his lifestyle and in his pontificate.

People are asking: what is a Jubilee?

According to the Bible, a Jubilee is a special time in which God gives special graces.

From the first day I entered the DAUGHTERS OF ST PAUL, I felt that this was where God wanted me to be. I have not looked back nor regret my decision to give up a promising career and a worldly rich life to become a nun. God has been with me all these fifty golden years, always protecting, guiding, and loving me with faithfulness and mercy.

During this adventure of life, God placed several persons in my path so that they could be the concrete signs of his love and care. I can say that they helped to make me the person I am now, and they have made my life so rich and beautiful, happy and fulfilled. They also helped me to become “holy” according to God’s plan. I can never thank God enough for the gift of these dear sisters and I also can never thank them  enough for being my guardian angels.

Sr Elisabetta Capello

Now I want to introduce two good friends who have journeyed with me for the last forty years. Indian Sr Fidelis Singh, born and bred in the Philippines, worked in India in the 1960s where I met her. Full of mischief and good humour, we became good friends because both of us are workaholics! We spent many lovely hours together doing the work in our convent. Later, Sr Fidelis returned to work in the Philippines where I also see her whenever I go there. She is such a faithful friend who always tried to please me and make me happy. On my part, my first thought is always “my dear Comrade” (she called me a Red communist because I am Chinese!) whenever I have to send a postcard from any country.

My second good friend is Filipina Sr Christabel Vicente. We worked together in England where I lived for four years before being sent to Singapore. Sr Christabel is also a  workaholic doing the accounts and all kinds of other jobs non-stop. She helps me immensely by coordinating all the Orders from other English suppliers, and forwarding them to me in wherever I was working. We don’t see each other often but we always keep in touch. Just before my Golden Jubilee celebration in Rome, we managed to have a few days together in great joy and gladness.
