SR GRACE HAS A NEW KNEE

At every retreat we usually have a resolution for the year. For a few years my resolution was taken from St Paul to the Philippians 3: 10 - “All I want is to know Christ and the power of his resurrection, and the sharing of his suffering, by  becoming like him in his death.”

This year, the Lord took me at my words. In September I did a total knee replacement surgery.  This was really sharing in the Lord’s sufferings. Never before had I experienced such terrible continuing pain. All I could do was to repeat every day to the Lord, “I offer it all up to you, according to your holy will, but I know you are journeying with me.” Jesus’ resurrection power sustained me throughout.

After the surgery I was given hospitality in the Old Age Home run by the Sisters of the Poor in Sheung Shui. Here they gave me a big room with facilities to go to the chapel and dining room by lift. In the beginning I had to use a frame to hobble around, then later a walking stick. It was impossible to stay in my own convent where we have so many staircases, and my room is on the third floor.

The stay in the Old Age Home lasted 10 weeks. For the first two weeks I was on painkiller tablets every six hours. It made me drowsy, spiritless, out of this world. I had neither desire to eat, pray or do anything. This period made me understand how some people are living a kind of death and without faith and trust in God’s love and strength, their existence is really pitiful.

Here in this place, I can see many kinds of people, some admirable for their cheerful and selfless life, trying to give a hand wherever needed. They wheel the disabled ones to church, to eat and to do some exercise. They even cut the fruits so that those with teeth problems can enjoy the food.

Others are so selfish and grabbed whatever they can for themselves to ensure their security. Some others only gossipped about other people’s defects and mistakes. A few of them are in wheel chairs, depending on others to help them move about.

When I thought about my purpose for staying in that place, for convalescence and regaining my physical powers, I felt such compassion for those old folks. I said to myself: I have a future. God is giving me a new knee. Maybe I will leap up like a deer or run a marathon. Whatever it is, the Lord has some plans for me. That is enough for me to hold on to my present suffering and pain. He is there leading me through it all.

For the old folks, I really pray for them that they may live their twilight years in faith and complete trust in God’s loving care for them. That they may be aware of this loving God and give love to others to share in this loving kindness of God to all. Then they will be very different people. They will be happy and make others happy too.

Residents are given many religious, cultural and physical enrichments. The chaplain, Fr Dino Doimo, gives them catechism, Bible and religious instruction. His homilies at daily Mass are practical and useful for daily living of our Christian faith. Sometimes volunteers come to teach them literacy and computer class. Often schools, parishes and other organisations come on Sundays to entertain them with shows and mini-concerts.    Generous people also give them seasonal gifts of food and “lucky money”. I must say that this very big Old Age Home is very well run. Residents here are indeed blessed.

I thank God for giving me this interlude, a transition from the old painful way of living to a renewed physical life when I can carry out God’s plans for me with more energy and fruitfulness, trusting entirely in God’s all-KNOWING design for me. And I thank the Sisters of the Poor in the Old Age Home for their gracious hospitality to me.
