What a magnificent sight, seeing a long procession of red-robed priests, altar servers and the Bishop of Macau slowly advancing into the Cathedral amidst jubilant music from the Cathedral Choir!
The packed church stood enchanted and reverent. The Eucharist began. All the movements and gestures of the leading participants were carefully rehearsed, adding to the solemnity and beauty of the ceremony.
This was Saturday, August 23rd in the Macau Cathedral. The function marked the centenary of the foundation of the Pauline Family, founded in Italy in 1914 by Blessed James Alberione. The Pauline Family consists of 10 institutes: five religious congregations, four secular institutes and one lay association. About 40 members of the Pauline Family were present at this celebration, two priests of the Society of St Paul from Macau, 11 Daughters of St Paul from Macau and Hong Kong, four Sister Disciples of the Divine Master from Hong Kong, and the rest were members of the Association of Pauline Cooperators from Macau and Hong Kong.
The Bishop of Macau, Jose Lai, was visibly encouraging and affirming of the spirit and apostolate of the Pauline Family. He spoke of their mission of bringing the Good News to the present generation through the media of social communication. He felt so at home with the Pauline Family that he remained a good while during the Refreshment and entertainment time with the big crowd of friends, benefactors and well-wishers after the Mass.
Special mention must be made to thank the Cathedral Choir for their splendid singing and precise musical performance which enhanced the festive atmosphere. And to complement the liturgical celebration there was even a magic show by Claretian Fr Jojo, and the unmistakable voice of Elvis Presley, impersonated by well-known Macau local celebrity – RUDY SOUSA. Everybody seemed so happy tucking into the snacks and drinks, and enjoying the boisterous singing and the smart tricks of “magician Fr Jojo”.
Someone was heard saying that he never attended such a religious function with such a mix of heavenly and earthly delights as on that memorable day. Blessed James Alberione in heaven must have beamed with joy to see the results of his work after 100 years.
