Our annual Christmas project this year was visiting an old folks home in Tai Po. Through the program arrangement of our beloved cooperator Ivy Tse, together with Sister Grace, our spiritual director and ten of our Pauline Cooperators, we arrived at the home at 9:45 am carrying bags of Christmas gifts for the elderly. The weather was wet and cold but it didn't dampen our Christmas spirit to bring joy and cheer to the old folks, our little corporal works of mercy! Of course we never fail to exercise our charism of spiritual works of mercy by telling them the story of the First Christmas, two thousand years ago…

For me, this year's Christmas project was unlike the past four years as I felt the Holy Spirit removing all the obstacles and preconceived ideas of "just another routine volunteer project"! I was moved to see their warm welcome, waiting for us and thanking us for visiting them. When I participated wholeheartedly in the carolling with the elderly, I could feel their joy and the genuine laughter which must be very much lacking in the not so happy place. I did not only hear but listened with empathy to their grievances of abandonment, rejection and fear of the future. As I walked down the hall of the Home for the Aged, I, too, experienced fear of my own future! But, unlike the non-believers, I am so glad that I know He holds the future and He promises that His perfect love will cast out all my fear.

This Christmas project is a reminder for me that life is very fragile and there are lots of corporal and spiritual works of mercy waiting for me to do...
